Types of braces
Ligature braces
This is a time-tested orthodontic treatment. The name comes from the Latin word “ligature”, which means “bunch”. These bracket systems consist of an arc with small locks. There are two types of fastening- wires and elastic bands.
Elastic bands are used in the initial stages of bite correction in Yerevan, Armenia, since their pressure on the arc is not strong enough. Wires are fix the structure more tightly and they are applied later or at the final stage of bite correction in Yerevan, Armenia.
Ligature – free braces or self-ligating braces – appeared recently. Their main feature is that the locks are attached to the arc by a special mechanism – clamps, without elastic rings or wires. Such system does not require constant correction, and the patient will not need to visit the dentist often during the treatment. Another feature is smaller size compared with classical braces, which makes them more comfortable. Today braces can be fixed both in the inner or outer side of teeth, depending on doctor’s recommendations.
Lingual ( internal ) – are attached to the inner side and are almost invisible, which make them the most aesthetic option of orthodontic treatment.
Vestibular braces are attached to the outer side of teeth. Vestibular braces do not have aesthetic features as lingual, but they have lower cost and are more convenient for hygienic care.
In modern orthodontics, braces can be made of metal, ceramics, plastic and sapphire.
Plastic, in comparison with metal, have more aesthetic appearance, but they are not strong enough, and also require longer treatment due to characteristics of this material.
Metal braces are made of stainless steel, titanium or an alloy of nickel and titanium. Brackets made of are reliable and durable and can correct the most complex anomalies. Despite the fact that metal loses in terms of aesthetic, they provide the fastest result, they are difficult to damage with solid food and are affordable option for orthodontic treatment.
Ceramic braces are made of special material – polycrystalline aluminum oxide. The feature of ceramic braces is that the color of such braces is close to the natural color of the enamel, which makes them also invisible to others.
Sapphire braces are made of artificial sapphire crystal. They are more reliable, in comparison with plastic or ceramic, have high aesthetics and transparency
Teeth brackets can also be combined, which means the use of ceramics or sapphires in the “smile zone”, metal in the chewing zone.
